Abstract

Title: "Effect of economic, cultural and environmental impacts on the attitudes of residents of Punta del Este"

Abstract

Purpose: The objective is to determine the causal effect of economic benefits, improvements in the urban environment, cultural change and concern for the environment on the general perception of tourism and support for an increase in the number of tourists, in the case of Punta del Este (Uruguay).

Design/methodology/approach: For the study, a questionnaire used in previous studies was used, carrying out the field work between 2013 and 2014 in the Maldonado-Punta del Este conurbation (Uruguay). Data analysis was performed using structural equations, specifically partial least squares regression (PLS).

Results: The most remarkable result is the importance of improvements in the urban environment and public services for the formation of positive attitudes towards tourism and support for an increase in tourist arrivals. The environmental benefits and concerns have an eminently indirect effect, and cultural changes are not significant in the study.

Implications: a social and global approach of the local community is essential for the management of this tourist destination.

Originality/value: The interest of the study lies in analyzing the causes of tourism support and an increase in tourists in a very important destination at the national and regional level, but that so far has not had academic studies in the field of Attitudes of the residents.

Keywords: environment, cultural change, Punta del Este, Maldonado, Attitudes, Residents.
