Dependencia Económica del Turismo y Actitudes de los Residentes en Santa Eulària des Riu (Ibiza)

José Ramón Cardona, Xing Peng

Abstract

Title: "Economic Unit of Tourism and Attitudes of Residents in Santa Eulària des Riu (Ibiza)"

Abstract

Purpose: To determine how the perception of being a region economically dependent on tourism affects the residents of a consolidated tourist destination, both its effect on the perceptions of tourism impacts, and on the formation of the general attitude towards the sector and support to a greater volume of tourists.

Design/methodology/approach: For the study, a questionnaire used in previous works was used, carrying out the field work during 2012 in the municipality of Santa Eulària des Riu, one of the five that make up the island of Ibiza (Spain). The data analysis was performed using structural equation models, specifically the partial least squares regression (PLS) was used.
Results: The perception of a strong dependence on tourism causes a more positive assessment of the benefits and a more positive general attitude, forcing more positive positions towards the sector even if it does not mitigate the perception of costs.

Implications: The economic dependence of the sector causes more positive attitudes and, therefore, raising public awareness of the importance of tourism for the region is essential to obtain greater support for tourism development.

Originality/value: This paper analyzes the importance of economic dependence in the formation of residents' attitudes and the sequence that leads to support for increases in tourist arrivals. This shows why in highly developed tourist destinations residents show support for the sector despite expressing many criticisms of it.
